And the count down begins.. I’m going to start off by saying this count down is not a pregnancy count down being that it is 9 months (that’s awkward). The count down I am talking about is the count down to legality. Turning 21, the last age that everyone eagerly waits for. The age that gives you more options on the social front and the age that drains your cash.
So 9 months, 3 days, 11 hours and 15 minutes is November 11 and my birthday…if you haven’t guessed already. This would be perfectly fine if I didn’t have friends all turning 21 already. This has always been a problem for me, I have always become friends with those older than myself. This was fine when I was 15 years old and my friends were 16, I got a lot of free transportation out of it. But now that the difference between 21 and 20 is the legal consumption of alcohol and an MIP, things have changed and my friends have slowly disappeared one-by-one.
It hasn’t been too bad so far, mainly just Thursday nights when Joe’s has their “Ladies’ Night”. Which really isn’t all that bad considering I have work Thursday nights and an early morning class on Fridays. As for the rest of my friends’ “bar nights” I’m stuck finding my own things to do.
So what is there to do in this small college town?
Although Stillwater, Okla. is great, there isn’t much to do on the itinerary. So here are some of the things I came up with..
-Life chat– Orange Leaf and Aspen are my personal favorites. These are great places to kill an hour or two with a close friend to just sit and life chat. Personally, I feel like Aspen is used for the more serious life chats. The “Hey, let’s get coffee” line is almost just as bad as “Hey, we need to talk..” line. Not going to lie, I may or may not have broken up with someone at Aspen. It’s an easy getaway, you’re not stuck having to finish your meal, and its a pretty relaxing environment. Orange Leaf on the other hand is a little more uplifting and a more positive environment. So I’d stick with Orange Leaf for more casual encounters.
–Get some fresh air/ be active– My personal favorite is running, or walking (let’s get real), out at Boomer. Especially with a furry companion. Dogs love a nice stroll out at Boomer. If you don’t have one, borrow one! Most dog owners are almost always more than willing to offer up their dog for a walk. There is also the Humane Society. They have cats and dogs to play with, it’s easy to spend at least 2 hours there if you’re an animal person. Plus, you get service hours (win-win right?). Then there is bowling, I know its lame but come on.. it’s Stillwater, Oklahoma. It’s really not all that bad if you have a good group of friends with you. Last but not least, there is the Colvin Recreation Center. The Colvin has almost everything from rock climbing to Squash, and hey, its free.
–Find a “Haven”- One of the most important things you can have in college. Living in a sorority house with 66 other girls can get a little over whelming, which is why I found my haven. My haven is really just one of my best friends house. All we really do is homework and watch movies along with various other activities.. ( 😉 ). This way, you don’t have to spend money, just enjoy your time relaxing with your best pals.
Yeah, there isn’t that much to do in Stillwater other than going to the bars. Honestly, it’s not really about what you are doing, but who you are with. Find a good group of friends that will be there for you no matter what. As for my friends.. see you in 9 months, 3 days, 11 hours, and 4 minutes.
